University of North Carolina at Charlotte Standardizes on SSH Tectia to Secure its Data-Intensive Computer Network

SSH Communications Security Corp. (HEX:SSH1V), a world-leading provider of enterprise security solutions and end-to-end communications security, and the original developer of the Secure Shell protocol, today announced that the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNC Charlotte) has selected SSH Tectia™ to ensure secure file transfer and secure system administration with centralized management functionality for its complex, data-intensive campus computer network.

With nearly 300 servers and multiple networking environments, including Red Hat Linux, Solaris and Windows 2003, UNC Charlotte relies on the SSH Tectia client/server solution to meet the daily challenge of effectively securing the vast amount of data accessed by more than 20,700 students, 800 full-time faculty members and staff. In addition, SSH Tectia Manager, the only centralized Secure Shell management solution, is integral in helping UNC Charlotte's IT staff easily and effectively deploy pre-configured SSH Tectia software to both clients and servers, manage and administer security policy, and enable auditing functionality within the SSH Tectia environment.

UNC Charlotte will also deploy SSH Tectia Connector, an invisible desktop client ideal for large end-user environments to enable secure application connectivity. SSH Tectia Connector automatically creates a transparent secure tunnel when a TCP/IP connection is established. UNC Charlotte will use SSH Tectia Connector to secure an Oracle database application access. SSH Tectia Connector was the only product available that will allow application tunneling rules based on DNS, avoiding the need to open a range of ports on the firewall by enabling port forwarding.

“Being a major university that rivals many large enterprise environments, one of the biggest challenges we faced was effectively managing all security policies across UNC Charlotte's multiple servers and operating environments," said Carter Heath, University IT Security Officer of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. "Not only does the SSH Tectia client/server solution provide robust and time-tested security, but SSH Tectia Manager also enables easy deployment and maintenance, and provides effective environment monitoring from a central location. We needed a single, robust Secure Shell solution to be standardized in our heterogeneous network environment. SSH Communications Security, being the original developer of the Secure Shell protocol, made SSH Tectia the clear choice."

“SSH Tectia is an ideal solution to support both small and large complex university IT environments," said George Adams, president and CEO of SSH Communications Security, Inc. "This is an excellent example of SSH's ongoing commitment to provide our customers with a cost-effective, yet powerful solution to secure mission-critical data, both internally and externally throughout the network. We are pleased that UNC Charlotte selected SSH Tectia as its end-to-end security solution of choice."

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte purchased SSH Tectia through SSH's University Licensing Program, a unique offering that enables universities of any size to implement the SSH Tectia solution at a discount, making it an attractive and cost-effective offering.

About the SSH University Licensing Program

The University Site License Program is an attractive and cost-effective offering that enables universities of any size to implement the SSH Tectia solution at a fraction of the cost of enterprise commercial licenses, and includes one year of support at no additional charge. Under the program, universities can purchase SSH Tectia packages by a site license, or by individual product licenses for SSH Tectia Manager, SSH Tectia Client and/or SSH Tectia Server. The site license is available under a small, medium or large model, with a perpetual license as long as the maintenance contract is valid. SSH Tectia support is offered at a percentage of the site license total, and includes software updates, e-mail support and phone startup support with a multi-year commitment under the program terms.
